The Citadel (Corps of Cadets Parade)

In January 1861, cadets from what would become The Citadel manned a battery on Morris Island and fired the first shots of the Civil War, shelling the Union steamship *Star of the West* as it attempted to resupply Fort Sumter. That fact alone earns the school its place in American history. Established in 1842 as the South Carolina Military Academy, The Citadel now holds its Corps of Cadets Friday dress parades on the main parade ground — open to the public, no ticket required.
