The militia that marched to Kings Mountain in 1780 did so through territory that is now four states — Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina — and the 330-mile trail that retraces their route was designated the first National Historic Trail in the eastern United States, exactly 200 years after the event it commemorates. A commemorative motor route runs the length of it along state highways; more than 57 miles are developed for foot travel. Every year, reenactors walk most of the route anyway.
