Elizabethton Covered Bridge

National Register of Historic Places
Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

A local doctor took the contract in 1882 because no qualified bridge contractor could be found — and walked away with a profit of five dollars. That's how the Elizabethton Covered Bridge got built, and got its nickname. The 134-foot Howe truss span crosses the Doe River connecting 3rd Street to Hattie Avenue, survived a disastrous 1901 flood that took out every other major bridge nearby, and still carries pedestrians and cyclists today. It predates the downtown it now anchors.
