Chapel in the Hills (Stavkirke)

Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

Dedicated on July 6, 1969, this stave church near Rapid City is an exact replica of Norway's Borgund stavkirke, built around 1150 and considered the most completely preserved stave church still standing in Norway. The Norwegian Department of Antiquities supplied the blueprints. Norwegian woodcarver Erik Fridstrøm and Rapid City resident Helge Christiansen produced the woodcarvings together. The site also holds a log cabin built in 1876 by Norwegian immigrant Edward Nielsen, and a grass-roofed stabbur that serves as the visitor center.
