S&W Cafeteria Building (S&W Market)

National Register of Historic Places
Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

The three-story building at the corner of downtown went up in 1929 — designed by Douglas Ellington, the architect who gave Asheville most of its Art Deco landmarks. The front facade is sheathed in grey ashlar. Polychrome ornamentation runs across it: geometric patterns, exotic motifs, the kind of detailing that made Art Deco feel like optimism made solid. Local tradition holds that the address is 56 Patton Avenue, and that the terracotta work includes chevrons, urns, and fountains.

It was built for an S&W Cafeteria. In 1974, the cafeteria moved to the Asheville Mall. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

In 2019, renovations began. S&W Market — a food hall — opened in June 2021. The Hop ice cream has a stall inside.
