People's Center (Salish-Kootenai Museum)

The Kootenai lived in the mountains west of the Continental Divide for more than 14,000 years, the Destination context tells us — long before Whitefish had a name, in English or otherwise. The People's Center holds that thread. Operated by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, it carries the history, traditions, and art of the Salish, Pend d'Oreille, and Kootenai peoples — three distinct nations whose presence here predates every railroad reroute, every ski lift, every stump left in a downtown street. Come because the land you're standing on has a longer story than the resort brochure suggests, and this is where that story is kept.
