Milo Apgar arrived at Lake McDonald in the 1890s intending to farm. He and other early homesteaders eventually figured out that tourists were better business than crops, and built accordingly. That pivot is the whole story of Apgar Village — a working gateway that has sat at the foot of Lake McDonald ever since, on land the Kootenai people have known for thousands of years.
