Johnson Square

National Register of Historic Places
Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

Savannah started here. Johnson Square was the first of the city's 22 squares, laid out in 1733, and it remains the largest. At its center stands a marble obelisk honoring General Nathanael Greene, the Revolutionary War hero whose remains — lost after Civil War vandalism scrambled the burial records at Colonial Park Cemetery — were eventually recovered and interred beneath the monument in 1901. The cornerstone was laid by Lafayette himself, in 1825. The square also contains two fountains and a sundial.
