Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway

Good forOutdoor loversHistory buffs

On May 7, 1966, a tramway built by Bell Engineering of Lucerne, Switzerland, made its maiden voyage up the western face of the Sandia Mountains outside Albuquerque — and held the title of longest aerial tram in the world until 2010. The ride covers 3,819 vertical feet in 15 minutes, topping out at 10,378 feet. The longest of its two spans passes directly over the canyon where TWA Flight 260 went down in 1955, killing all 16 aboard. Some wreckage remains on the canyon floor.
