Built by the Dominican Order in 1609 at the crest of a hill in San Germán, the church of Porta Coeli — "Gateway to Heaven" in Latin — is one of the oldest surviving church structures in the Western Hemisphere. Sold to the Puerto Rican government for a dollar in 1949, it was restored and reopened in 1960 as the Religious Art Museum of Porta Coeli, the first museum of its kind on the island. The collection centers on religious paintings and wooden carvings, including Baroque-style altarpieces and a Black Virgin of Montserrat statuette.
