Cape Hatteras Weather Bureau Station Site

Construction of the weather station in Hatteras completed in 1901, and for decades the building and its coastal warning display tower served as the community's early warning system — flags flown from that tower gave residents what little time they had before storms arrived. The tower eventually collapsed after hurricane damage, was removed, and only recently replaced through a partnership that also restored the historic building. The Tropical Storm flag now flies again over Hatteras village for the first time in decades.
