Gens de Couleur Libres — Free People of Color

Under French and Spanish rule, New Orleans developed the largest and most prosperous free Black community in the antebellum South. The gens de couleur libres owned property, ran businesses, composed music, and built the cultural infrastructure of Tremé — the oldest African American neighborhood in the country.
