Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church

This 1919 Catholic church at 610 Louisiana Avenue anchors the southern edge of the Charpentier District. Its twin steeples and Romanesque arches make it the most visually commanding religious building in the neighborhood. Sacred Heart served the French-speaking Catholic families whose labor built the Charpentier houses — a reminder that the carpenters who gave the district its name were building more than architecture. They were building a community, and the church was its center.
