Marguerite Brunswig Staude, a rancher and sculptor, first conceived this chapel in 1932 after seeing the Empire State Building rise. It took until 1956 to build it — a detour through Budapest, a world war, and a special-use permit obtained with Senator Barry Goldwater's help. Designed by August K. Strotz and built into Sedona's red rock buttes within the Coconino National Forest, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. The American Institute of Architects gave it an Award of Honor in 1957. In 2007, Arizonans voted it one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of Arizona.
