Old Exchange Building and Provost Dungeon

National Historic Landmark
Good forHistory buffsArts & culture lovers

Built between 1767 and 1771 by South Carolina's provincial government, the Old Exchange served as customs house, public market, meeting place, and jail before the British seized it in 1780 and turned its basement into a military prison. A 2012 study documented at least 120 prisoners held here during the occupation. The building later housed South Carolina's convention to ratify the U.S. Constitution, and was the site of events during George Washington's week-long Charleston visit. It has been a National Historic Landmark since 1973, operated by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
