Carter Family Memorial Music Center (AP Carter Store Site)

The Carter Family Memorial Music Center sits in Hiltons, Virginia — 35 minutes from Bristol, the town Congress designated the Birthplace of Country Music. The trio of A.P., Sara, and Maybelle Carter launched everything here with the 1927 Bristol Sessions recordings, credited with inventing what we now call country music. The Fold runs weekly Saturday night performances, February through November, and hosts an annual festival. Johnny Cash gave his final public performance on this stage. Come for the flatfooting.
