General Francis Preston built the brick mansion in 1832 for his family at a cost of $15,000. Over the following century it served as a women's college, a Civil War hospital, and a residence for Barter Theatre actors before opening as a hotel in 1935. Today the Martha Washington Inn carries 63 guest rooms and a spa — and, by local tradition, several ghosts, including a young nurse named Beth whose violin is still heard near Room 403.
