The hot mineral water comes up from the ground at 113°F and has been doing so, at this location, since before anyone built anything here. Bill and Percie Knowles opened a hotel and plunge pool on the site in 1900; when Bill died in 1910, Percie ran it alone. By 1916 a hospital wing had been added. The resort changed hands repeatedly after 1948 before owners Mike and Eve Art bought it in 1973 and built it into the year-round destination it is today, on the National Register of Historic Places.
