Hooker Falls

Good forOutdoor lovers

The Little River drops thirteen feet over a rock ledge in DuPont State Recreational Forest, creating a wide, symmetrical waterfall that feeds into a deep pool below. The pool is large enough to swim in, and on summer days that's exactly what people do. The trail from the parking area is a quarter-mile walk through mixed forest — short enough that families with young children make the trip without complaint.

The falls sit on the Henderson County side of the forest, which spans more than 10,000 acres across Henderson and Transylvania counties. Below the falls, the river continues south to feed Cascade Lake. The trailhead has restrooms and changing rooms, which is rare enough in a state forest to be worth mentioning.

This is not dramatic water. It doesn't thunder or churn. The falls are low and even, spilling across the width of the river in a single drop. What makes people come back is the pool — wide, calm, cold enough to matter in July. The rocks at the base are flat enough to sit on, though they get slippery near the water. Dogs are allowed on leash. There are no trash cans in the forest; pack out what you carry in.

The trail continues upstream to Triple Falls and High Falls, both taller and steeper, if you want to keep walking. But most people don't. They came for the swim, and Hooker Falls delivers that without requiring much effort. It's the kind of place that works because it doesn't ask for more than it gives — a short walk, cold water, a place to sit in the shade. Western North Carolina has taller falls, deeper forests, longer trails. This one just happens to be easy to reach, and honest about what it is.
