Cotile Lake Recreation Area

A 1,775-acre lake completed in 1965 for irrigation and flood control, fifteen miles northwest of Alexandria — it became a recreation destination by accident. Rapides Parish built the dam to water the rice and soybean fields of the Boyce flatlands. The lake filled; families started coming on weekends; a swimming beach and bathhouse went in; full-hookup RV sites followed. The summer headquarters of central Louisiana, built to grow soybeans.
