The mystery is the show. In 1587, 117 men, women, and children landed on Roanoke Island to establish the first English colony in America. Governor John White returned to England for supplies; war with Spain held him there three years. When he came back, the colony had vanished — only the letters "CRO" carved into a tree. Since 1937, Paul Green's outdoor drama has staged that disappearance every summer at the Waterside Theatre inside Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. Nobody's solved it yet.
