Ocracoke Village

Good forFamiliesHistory buffs

Blackbeard made his last anchorage here, and the island has been resisting easy access ever since. No bridges reach Ocracoke — you arrive by ferry, across Pamlico Sound or Hatteras Inlet, or not at all. The village sits at the widest point of the island, population 797 at the last count, with a dialect old enough to carry traces of its own — the "Hoi Toider" accent, fading now among younger residents but still audible if you know what you're listening for. Most of the island remains Cape Hatteras National Seashore. What the village kept is itself.
