1880 Train (Black Hills Central Railroad)

Good forOutdoor loversHistory buffs

The line reached Keystone on January 20, 1900, built by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad to serve mining and timber interests in the Black Hills. In 1956, two steam enthusiasts set out to keep at least one working steam railroad alive for what they called "boys of all ages." They found their equipment, secured their support, and began running in 1957. The railroad was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Trains still run between Hill City and Keystone — 20 miles of track that outlasted the mines that made them necessary.
